Preparing for college is one of the most important parts of a student’s life, as we schedule things like Advanced Placement courses, different language classes, and college credit courses all to help us graduate in hopes of getting into our dream universities.
But one thing we as students all know is that getting into our dream schools can be expensive, and that sometimes, things don’t always work out on our road into the future.
Scholarships to students are extremely important in aiding them as they prepare to head off to college, as finances, including books, credits, and other expenses can become very inflated.
Students all over the country apply for these grants offered to them in hopes of gaining a scholarship to help with their schooling after their high school years.
But the question most students ask is “Where do I start?”
Here at Franklin Regional, juniors and seniors receive the ‘Franklin Regional Scholarship Opportunities’ packet from the counselors’ office.
In this packet is an alphabetical list of scholarships available to students wanting to apply.
“Even though only juniors and seniors receive this packet, all students should know of the opportunities presented to them,” said counselor Kristin Scott.
All different kinds of scholarships offered to students can be found in multiple places for those looking, such as Counselors’ Corner on the Franklin Regional website, said Scott.
There, a digital copy of the scholarships opportunities packet can be found, along with any information from outside colleges that students would have questions about.
“The scholarship link found in the Counselors’ Corner is a good way to start and find scholarships that are available now,” said Scott. “Most of the scholarships are for seniors, but students can see if they fit the requirements for what they want to apply for.”
Students only need to log on to the Franklin Regional website and head to the senior high school direct website and select the Counselors’ Corner under the ‘For Students’ tab.
For anymore information, students can go to the counselors’ office and see any of the counselors at any time they are available.
“Another great source to use is the Career Cruising website,” said Scott. “Going into the Financial Aid link under the ‘College Planning’ tab will show you thousands of programs across the country. You only need to answer some questions to help narrow down your search to see what you can apply to.”
Students should be advised to give out no personal data if they go looking for scholarships themselves. No money should be paid by you when applying, and parents should oversee all applications until the source is verified, said Scott.
When looking to apply for scholarships, students are recommended to start early and be aware of deadlines on the scholarships they wish to apply to, said Scott.
“Even if you’re not of age to apply for the one you want, it’s always good to know their due dates so that you can apply on time when you’re able to,” said Scott. “You don’t want to be searching for a scholarship and find one, only to realize that the due date for application has passed.”
When looking to start applying, students shouldn’t be afraid of taking the first step and sending in an application.
Students should read through all of the scholarships they can and try it out and see what happens when they first start.
“Once you send in one application, you learn the process quickly, and can now apply for many,” said Scott.
Student drawers are also available in the counselors’ office with hard copies of different scholarships that are applicable to.
Pamphlets and other student guides are also open to students who want extra information.
The counseling center is also open to all students who have questions or need help finding the right scholarship.
With different scholarships out there, students will be able to find the right one for them.
